Looking back is as much a part of the New Year’s transition as looking forward. We look back with praises to God for His incredible goodness; we look forward with hope to God for His unfolding, perfect plan.
As to His incredible goodness, let the psalmist put words in our mouths and hearts as we look back over this last year in our walk with our blessed Savior:
Psalm 103:1-5.
1. Bless the LORD, O my soul;
all that is within me, bless His holy name.
2. Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and do not forget all His kind deeds—
3. He who forgives all your iniquities
and heals all your diseases,
4. who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with loving devotion and compassion,
5. who satisfies you with good things,
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
This may seem easier said than done. It has been a year saturated with lies and hatred, and a disruption in the civil order that seem not to bode well for the new year. But we got to get our minds straightened out. We can have a transformed mind if we make the Word of God the dominant source of input, minimizing the impact of the world’s media.
So, here is a transformative re-calibration exercise. Paul gives the action point on which hinges the entirety of theological treatise we call “the Book of Romans.” The purpose follows the word, “so that,” and prepares us for an exciting new year:
Romans 12:1-2. 1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Be thankful – It was a good old year! We were granted grace to survive and excel.
Be hopeful – It will be a good new year! We will dwell in His kingdom right here, right now.
Be encouraged – It may be the year of the Lord Jesus return as King of the world!
Another Reminding: The new “More of His Fullness” blog starts on Sundays in the new year.
